Description:
This book is in good condition, although the dust jacket is torn in many places. There is minimal wear on the front, back, edges, and spine of the cover boards. There is no bumping and little fraying on the cover boards. The dust jacket is taped down on the cover boards. The pages are beginning to yellow, but the pages are clear of any markings. "When, after thirty years, Henrietta Blackwell returned to Great Island, garlanded in her private grief, she was still a remarkably beautiful woman and something of a legend. The boatman's eyes had gone to her un-ringed left hand, the moment she stepped onto his deck, and he had called her 'Miss Henrietta' until the servant Rosa, blowing about in a small, fierce tempest, had rebuked him with assorted languages. He had shrugged and substituted 'Madam Bryce' though he knew as well as all the island did that the title was a polite fiction and that the elopement of three decades past had never been blessed by Church nor approved by Law...." - Chapter One from… Read More

This book is in good condition. There is some wear on the front, back, edges, and spine of the cover boards. There is some bumping and fraying on the cover boards. The previous owner has affixed a name label to the inside of the front cover board. The pages are yellowing and tanning, but the pages are clear of any markings."'Do you hear voices?' he asked. 'You think I am deaf?' 'Of course,' she said. 'I hear yours.' It was hard to keep on being civil. She was tired and he had been asking questions such a long time, days and days of incredibly naive questions. Now he was explaining that she misunderstood; he did not mean real voices. Fantastic. He was speaking, he said, of voices that were not real and yet they were voices he expected her to hear. He was something of a pest, this man, but she could think of no decent way to get rid of him. You could tell he meant well and so you tried to play the game with him, as if with a fanciful child...." - Chapter One from The Snake Pit

This book is in good condition. There is some wear on the front, back, edges, and spine of the book. There is some bumping and fraying of the cover boards. The pages are yellowing and tanning, but the pages are clear of markings. The previous owner has signed the inside of the front cover board. "How buildings and whole cities fell into ruin, how some vanished from sight and were rediscovered, is part of history. Archaeology, the study of ancient things, interprets what is found and explains, or even rewrites, history. From the places where the Romans lived, worked, worshiped, and amused themselves---from their burial places, too---from their art, their inscriptions, and their literature, we build up a picture of the Roman way of life, and people the past with living figures---not merely with stately statues...." - Chapter One from Roman Life
