Leiden: Brill, 2015. First edition. Hardcover. Fine. Octavo. xiii, (1), 348pp. Index and 50 page bibliography. Orange over black pictorial boards, spine lettered in white. Illustrated with over 40 text figures (most in color) and a map. A fine, as new copy. "In The Wandering Throne of Solomon: Objects and Tales of Kingship in the Medieval Mediterranean Allegra Iafrate analyzes the circulation of artifacts and literary traditions related to king Solomon, particularly among Christians, Jews and Muslims, from the 10th to the 13th century. The author shows how written sources and objects of striking visual impact interact and describes the efforts to match the literary echoes of past wonders with new mirabilia. Using the throne of Solomon as a case-study, she evokes a context where Jewish rabbis, Byzantine rulers, Muslim ambassadors, Christian sovereigns and bishops all seem to share a common imagery in art, technology and kingship." Description:
NP: Self-published, 1949. Original document. Softcover. g to g+. Folio. 98 pp. Spiral bound brown stiff wraps with mimeographed book block. The author Ida Ibekken, a student of the Hebrew language, approaches the Hebrew language from a rare perspective. She tries to show connections between Nordic languages and Hebrew with regard to meaning and phonetics. Starting off with names of deities and finding equivalents in Hebrew words, such as: Hebrew: "Adon" - meaning lord, master, which is found in "Wodin", meaning "the mighty", she finds equivalents in nearly all areas of language. e.g. Hebrew: pered - meaning mule, which equals the Low-German: perd and the Dutch: pard. Text in English and Hebrew in transliteration and handwritten Hebrew characters. Binding with some wear and fraying along edges. Age-toning and some foxing throughout block. Binding and interior in overall good to good+ condition.

Leiden: Brill, 2007. First edition. Hardcover. Fine. Octavo. viii, (4), 398pp. Index, bibliography and glossary. Text in English and Hebrew. Green buckram lettered in white. A fine, as new copy. From the Middle Ages until the present, the development of astrology among Jews was associated mainly with the name of Abraham Ibn Ezra (1089-1167). His scientific corpus deals with mathematics, astronomy, scientific instruments and tools, and the Jewish calendar; but especially with astrology. This volume is the first product of a larger enterprise-a scientific edition of all twelve Ibn Ezra's astrological treatises-and offers a critical Hebrew text of the two versions of Ibn Ezra's Sefer ha-Te'amim, the Book of Reasons, accompanied by an annotated translation and commentary. The two treatises presented here were designed by Ibn Ezra to offer "reasons", "explanations", or "meanings" of the raw astrological concepts formulated in the introduction to astrology that Ibn Ezra entitled Reshit Hokhmah (Beginning… Read More

Leiden: Brill, 2020. First edition. Hardcover. Fine. Octavo. xix, (1), 633, (1)pp. Index, bibliography and glossary. Text in English, Latin and Hebrew. Green buckram lettered in white with red band near top of spine. A fine, as new copy. As a result of Abraham Ibn Ezra's increasing popularity after his death, there were repeated waves of translation of collections of his Hebrew astrological treatises into Latin and into the emerging European vernaculars. A study of these versions affords us a golden opportunity to shed light on a significant missing link in our knowledge of Ibn Ezra's astrological oeuvre. The present volume offers the first critical edition, accompanied by an English translation, a commentary, and an introductory study, of three Latin texts on the astrological doctrines of elections and interrogations, written by or attributed to Abraham Ibn Ezra: the Liber electionum, the Liber interrogationum, and the Tractatus particulares. Leiden: Brill, 2017. First edition. Hardcover. Fine. Octavo. xiii, (1), 822pp. Indices and bibliography. Text in English and Hebrew with some Arabic. Green boards lettered in white, with a red spine band near top. A fine, as new copy. The present volume offers a critical edition of the Hebrew texts, accompanied by English translation and commentary of Reshit Ḥokhmah (Beginning of Wisdom) and Mishpeṭei ha-Mazzalot (Judgments of the Zodiacal Signs) by Abraham Ibn Ezra (ca. 1089-ca. 1161). The first, the summa and by far the longest of his astrological works, the target of the most cross-references from the rest of that corpus and the most influential, enjoyed the widest circulation among Jews in the Middle Ages and after. The second, by contrast, is the most obscure. It is never referred to elsewhere by its author and is the only work for which Ibn Ezra's authorship must be substantiated. Reshit Ḥokhmah and Mishpeṭei ha-Mazzalot were written in order to explain concepts common to the various… Read More

Quarto. xii, 2 leaves, 250pp. Bound in brown half leather over tan textured buckram with gilt tooling and ruling on spine; raised bands. Thesis presented for the Degree of Doctor in Philosophy. "The main portion of this thesis is a new study of the coronation of the king, with special reference to the inscriptions of the Temple of Edfu. It has been possible to reconstruct much of the sequence of the episodes of the ritual, to establish the fact that the coronation ceremonies were not performed in a single part of the temple but in different parts of the temple or of the temple area. The various places in the Temple of Edfu where these ceremonies were performed have been identified. In the course of this study a new analysis and study has been made of the Installation of the Sacred Falcon. Since this festival was in effect the annual renewal of the coronation of the earthly king, an analysis of its… Read More
