Uncut copy in contemporary half calf, spine richly gilt (spine restored). Rare first edition - limited to one hundred copies of which this is number XXIV - of this bibliography of the Italian novel from the 14th to the 19th century, by the eminent Italian bibliographer, biographer and editor, Bartolomeo Gamba (1780-1841), who is perhaps best known for his Italian bibliography, Serie dei Testi di Lingua (1839). Gamba was for many years assistant librarian of the Marcian Library in Venice. Because of the great scarcity of the present edition the following one is often referred to as the first.Petzholdt p. 724, Brunet II p. 1473.

The major work and catalogue raissonée on Georges Cretté (1893-1969), the successor of Marius Michel and one of the greatest twentieth century bookbinders.

A very good copy of a very important collection of art books. The introduction says: "La bibliothèque dont nous publions aujourd'hui le Catalogue, renferme, à notre avis, la collection la plus considérable de livres sur les beaux arts qui ait été jusqu'à présent offerte aux enchères."

Three titles in one volume. 8vo. All three: Third editions, Amsterdam, Daniel van den Dalen, 1697. [12], 151; 92; 111 pp. With two engraved frontispieces (for the first two titles) and a few copper engravings, one of them full-page. Some foxing and browning. Half calf with paste paper boards, edges sprinkled red. (binding rubbed and spine damaged at the top and bottom, part of the hinges cracked, interior fine). All in all a good copy.Willem Goeree (1635-1711), the son of a physician and born in Middelburg, was unable to go to University because of his father's early death. He then chose to become a printer and bookseller, first in Middelburg from 1666 to 1677 and then in Amsterdam but he also wrote books on antiquities and art like the present work. First flyleaf loosening, browned throughout and (water)stain on last flyleaf. François-Joseph de Grammont was Archbishop of Besançon from 1698 to 1717. The present work contains the statutes of the diocesan synod convoced by him in his capacity as Archbishop. At a synod the decrees determined upon by the (arch)bishop are promulgated and a period of two months is allowed for having recourse against them to the bishop or the Holy See. All the clergy and laity of the diocese are bound by these decrees, and it is not necessary for the bishop to send his statutes to Rome for revision before publication. Pages 336 to 348 specifically deal with books and in the "mandemant" in the introductory material the archbishop explains why he forbids certain books in his diocese. Exlibris "Dr. Wiedemann, Chef-Redakteur der "Linzer Zeitung" and with his autograph name on the inside front cover. The Imitation of Christ is regarded as the most important devotional work in Catholic Christianity and is the most widely read devotional work next to the Bible. The book was written anonymously in Latin in the Netherlands ca. 1418-1427 as a model of the spiritual life for the brethern of the Devotion moderna, and Thomas à Kempis is generally accepted as the author.

1815. London, Thomas Davidson, for the Proprietors of the Collection, 1815. viii,481pp. Title printed in black and red. Frontispiece. Title-vignette and portraits. Description of 956 early books - with prices and synoptical Index. Original 3/4 calf binding, marbled bds. (boards and spine rubbed). A remarkable collection with a chequered history. Originally formed by Thomas Park, the collection was sold to Thomas Hill for an annuity, then sold to Octavius Gilchrist a grocer of literary leanings who finally sold it to Longmans. This ambitious catalogue fared badly and the remaining books were sold at auction in 1818. Many of them ended up in the Bridwell library. The catalogue however, is still cited as a reference work for early English Literature.

A fine copy of this standard work on bookbindings published with an 18 years' interval. Leon Gruel (1841-1923) was the celebrated Parisian bookbinder, bibliophile, collector and scholar, whose manuel historique... is considered one of the standard reference works on the subject. Gruel's bindings are highly acclaimed for their technical skill and artistic sensibility... [c.f. Schm.-K. 1535; Mejer 373; Brenner 518].

Augsburg, 1743. 8vo. 58 full-page engravings (size c. 10 x 16 cm), numbered 1 - 58 (including title). (complete). Each plate pasted down on a leaf of a nineteenth century cloth album. (cloth a bit faded).
The engravings are by Tobias Lobeck after the drawings by Gottfried-Bernhard Götz. Each engraving is accompanied by a Latin prayer to the Virgin Mary. They refer to the Loreto Litany, a Marian litany that was approved in 1587 by Pope Sixtus V. Gottfried Bernhard Göz (also Goez, Goetz or Götz 1708- 1774) was a German Rococo painter and engraver. In 1737 he founded a joint engraving publishing company in Augsburg with the Klauber brothers. Between 1737 and 1742 they worked together to produce more than 360 graphic sheets.
