Priced throughout in a contemporary hand. Reprint of an earlier catalogue for a sale that was supposed to take place in 1808. Caillard (1737-1807) was a French diplomat and man of letters. His was an important library containing notable incunabula, classical texts, scientific and natural history works, and voyages in the finest possible condition and often printed on large paper. Also included are manuscripts and fine bindings. Only edition and a nice clean copy of this important work which unfortunately lacks the two plates although seems they have never been bound into this particular copy. The colour circle or wheel is a common form adopted for colour systems. They have been used since the Middle Ages. Castel created a color wheel based on colour as a combination of light and shadow. First edition of this history of the Royal library in Stockholm. The history of this library goes back to the 16th century when King Gustav Vasa started collecting books. The Royal Collection formed the basis of what is now the National Library. Much of the library went up in flames during the great palace fire of 1697 when 17,286 bound volumes and 1,103 manuscripts were lost. Only 6,700 volumes and 283 manuscripts survived. Celsius (1716-1794), was a librarian and wrote other histories of important libraries. [Almquist 2629].
