Lithographed titlepage (= plate I), 2 ff letterpress text + 29 plates numbered II - XXX. (corners a bit rubbed and paper on inner front hinge a bit damaged & loosening, light waterstain in the lower margin of the titlepage and the textpages and plates 23 - 30, a bit more pronounced near the back).
The Aneid, written by Virgil between 29 and 19 BCE, is a Latin epic poem that tells the legendary story of Aeneas, a Trojan who fled the fall of Troy and travelled to Italy, where he became the ancestor of the Romans. The present work contains 30 lithographs, including the pictorial title, made by C. Motte after the orginal mural paintings by Luigi Ademollo (1764-1849), whose work can be seen at the Plazzo S. Numerous woodcut illustrations, 2 full page plates of that show the top parts of the illustrations on pages 284 & 285, plus one double-page plate that is comprised in the pagination. The lower edge has the written text in a contemporary hand: 'Architet. di Alberti'. (binding a bit soiled and damaged, some light foxing).
The first quarto edition of Cosimo Bartoli's translation in Italian of Alberti's work that was originally published in Latin in 1485. It was translated by Bartoli in 1550 and printed in a folio edition. The title is within a reduced copy of the architectural woodcut border of the title page of the 1550 folio edition. Contents: 10 pieces of original art-work (gouache on paste-board) for the frames of calendars 1953-1959; 4 similar pieces without date indication; Paste up of a calendar for 1950; 53 proof sheets of calendars for 1942 subsequently used as scrap paper (pencil notes); Proof sheet for a calendar of 1987; Incomplete copy of a calendar for 1959. Various sizes, average 250mm x 330mm. An interesting file of original artwork and proofsheets for this calendar that still can be found in most houses in France. Ever since the nineteenth century, in December, French postmen give their customers a calendar for the next year, in return for a small sum of money.

1777. Paris, Le Breton, 1777. 647pp. Contemporary mottled calf (some restaurations). Spine gold tooled. A nice and clean copy. An almanac is a book containing the days, weeks and months of the year together with information about festivals and holidays, ecclesiastical festivals, astronomical data, and often other information. The Almanach Royal was the official French Almanac that also gave lists of the members of the Royal Family, Church Officials, Officers, Ambassadors etc. etc. It was widely read by everyone who needed to know about the current state of the French administrative system.

No place, no date (but France, circa 1840). 28 cardboard cards, size 8,5 x 7,4 cm. The 28 cards contain the 26 letters of the alphabet and two card for the numbers (0 - 9).A lovely and extremely rare set of cards. Each cards shows a letter of the alphabet, both a capital letter and a miniscule, and each card shows a lithograph illustration in the lower half of the card. The letters are printed in relief in gold. The whole card and the illustrations have a border in that is also printed in relief in gold with the same decorative points. The back of the card has a text in rhyme that explains the illustration. There is no mention of a publisher of an editor. We have not found any reference to this alphabet, not in Gumuchian nor in another bibliography. It seems to be extremely rare.

A colourful poster published in the beginning of the seventies by the 'Association Choisir'.On April 5, 1971, in France, 343 filmmakers, writers, actresses, singers and philosophers ended a long-held silence. "One million women have abortions each year in France," they wrote in a manifesto published in the magazine Nouvel Observateur. "I declare that I am one of them. I declare that I've had an abortion. We demand open access to contraceptives; we demand open abortion." Written with the help of star intellectual Simone de Beauvoir and signed by celebrities ranging from Catherine Deneuve to Françoise Sagan, the text circulated quickly throughout the country. (iv), 124, (ii) pp. With four folding plates showing front and rear exterior views, a floor plan, and a view of the old city hall. With "Avertissement des editeurs sur cette nouvelle edition" on pages 125-126. Nineteenth century 3/4 brown morocco, marbled boards. All edges gilt. A beautiful copy. In 1639 the Amsterdam council decided that it was time to build a new town hall. The old medieval building was beyond repair and far too small. Amsterdam wanted a new, impressive building that would radiate the city's power. The architect Jacob van Campen was appointed to design the new building. He proposed a classical structure. Bruxelles, Librairie des Arts du Bâtiment F. Salmain et Fils, n.d. (1937). (size c. 37 x 27,5 cm). One page with a pricelist plus 52 plates held in portfolio (some browning around the edges). Halfcloth, boards with title illustration pasted on it. This portfolio contains 26 designs for modernist houses, each illustrated with two plates: the facade and a plan. The building prices can be found on the price-list that is laid in the front of the work. Rejecting ornament and embracing minimalism, Modernism became the single most important new style or philosophy of architecture and design of the 20th century. It was associated with an analytical approach to the function of buildings, a strictly rational use of (often new) materials, structural innovation and the elimination of ornament. It was also known as International Modernism or International Style, after an exhibition of modernist architecture in America in 1932 by the architect Philip Johnson. [c.f. website RIBA].

The photos show various Euorpean cathedrals, churches and palaces. They contain a.o. Notre Dame de Paris, The Sainte Chapelle in Paris, the Palazzio Vecchio in Florence, the Tower of Pisa, Westminster Abbey in London, Saint Paul's Cathedral in London, the Cathedral of Burgos, the Cathedral of Milan etc. And a few show details of monuments. Most are unsigned by a few give names of the photographers or publishers. (Giacomo Brogi - died 1882; Stengel & Markert - active between 1885 and 1889; Bolletti - c. 1880 - 1890).

Lisboa, na typographia calcographica, typoplastica, e litteraria do Arco do Cego, 1801. Halftitle, title, (iv), 70, (i) pp. Contemporary half calf, marbled boards. A copy on slightly blue paper. A copy that sometime during its existence has gotten several small holes in the covers and the text. The last page contains a catalogue of the books on art that were published by the Arco do Cego press and a list of libraries where these could be bought. Quite rare little work with only a few copies in libraries around the world.First, and only Portuguese edition of this work by François Saverio Vispré, first published in French as "Le Moyen De Devenir Peintre En Trois Heures". The book, in the form of a dialogue, was first published in France in 1755 and was popular enough to go through at least four editions. Original cream decorated publisher's binding and no title on the spine. One of the plates loose. This catalogue was published with various bindings, the present one signed "van den Heuvel. 's Hage" Title design by P.J.H. Cuypers.

Lisboa, (Na officina de Antonio Gomes), 1794. 25 pages letterpress text and 25 engraved plates (including the allegorical frontispiece of Lisbon after a design by Jeronymo de Barros-Ferreira, and engraved second titlepage). Engraved armorial device on letterpress title, 1 engraved figure and 13 wood-engraved initials in the lettepress part showing architectural motifs. Oblong folio. Contemporary full calf (slightly rubbed and some damage to bottom of spine). Some light ink stains and two bits of paper missing from the margin without touching the engravings. A good copy of a beautiful work.Aroujo was a Portuguese calligrapher and a Professor of Writing and Arithmetic as is stated on the titlepage.
