Description:
Fort Smith, Ar: February 15, 1895. Very good.. [1]p. on lined paper. Mailing folds, minor wear and toning. A notable letter from Cherokee Nation leader Clement V. Rogers, written to President Grover Cleveland, proposing fellow Democrat and Cherokee Nation member A.E. Ivey for the position of United States Marshal in Indian Territory. Clement "Clem" V. Rogers, the father of famed humorist Will Rogers, writes here in early 1895 as a member of the Intruder Commission, a small body appointed by Cleveland to sort out competing land claims in the Cherokee Nation; the word "intruder" actually referred to white settlers who had in many cases staked illegal claims to land in Indian Territory). Rogers recommends A.E. Ivey to the post of U.S. Marshal, writing that "Mr. Ivey is a Cherokee, a Democrat and was the choice of a great many people for the position of U.S. Marshal at Muskogee I.T. now filled by Mr McAllister." The letter is a rare instance of a Native American recommending another Native American for…

Pomona, Ca: Frasher's Fotos, 1930. Near fine.. 163 real photo postcards, each approximately 3.5 x 5.5 inches. Numerous card versos filled out, stamped, and cancelled. Minor dust soiling. A substantial collection of nearly 165 real photo postcards of Native Americans in Arizona and New Mexico by Burton Frasher, one of the most prolific western photographers during the first half of the 20th century. "Burton Frasher Sr. (1888-1955) began his commercial photography business in Lordsburg (now LaVerne) California in 1914. In 1921, he moved his studio to Pomona, California, where he began to sell his own increasingly popular picture postcard views of the Southwest. By the end of the 1920's, what had begun as a sideline became Frasher's main business focus. He traveled extensively through California, Arizona, New Mexico, Colorado, Utah, and Nevada, ranging up through Oregon, Washington, and Alaska, and down through Baja, California and Sonora, Mexico, taking pictures of whatever subjects he thought would…

[Browning, Mt, 1900. Very good plus.. Fifty-four real photo postcards, each approximately 3.5 x 5.5 inches. Occasional minor wear; light dust soiling. A substantial collection of almost fifty-five real photo postcards carrying the images and work of Thomas B. Magee, a noted photographer of the Blackfeet Native American tribes in Northwestern Montana during the late-19th and early-20th centuries. Magee maintained a commercial studio in Browning, Montana, which was continued by his son Henry following his death in 1930. The elder Magee was married to a Blackfeet Pikuni woman named Julia Howling and was a friendly colleague of Walter McClintock, the most prolific of the early 20th-century Montana Indian photographers. Like McClintock, he had the trust of the Blackfeet (in this case, because of his marriage), and therefore had greater access to their daily lives and activities. "As postmaster of Browning and husband of a Pikunni woman, Magee knew the people so well that he was generally welcome…

Group of documents concerning oil leases for the Wellsville Oil Company on lands owned by the Five Civilized Tribes in Oklahoma. Most of the documents are from the desk of Gabe E. Several documents name specific tribal land holders or mention legal issues surrounding the owner and the oil company. An example of the legal issues herein reads, "There is herewith returned, for correction, division order between your company, as lessee, and Job Thomas, as lessor, Royalty No. 1586. Description:
El Paso, 1933. About very good.. 100,[3]pp. Original printed wrappers. Front wrap separating; spine ends chipped. Light wear and minor chipping at edges. Toned. From the early 18th century, Catholics were prohibited from joining Masonic orders, but the popularity of freemasonry in the United States seems to have generated considerable interest among Spanish speakers. At least as early as 1818, publishers in the U.S. issued Spanish-language books explaining, supporting, and critiquing freemasonry. The translation of this extended article, apparently adapted from an encyclopedia, is credited to "el Obispo de Sonora," probably Juan Navarrete, who occupied that post from 1919 to 1968. The work provides an extensive description of masonry, its organization, and activities, with the goal of dispelling any masonic "propaganda" that attempted to portray their groups simply as social and benevolent societies. The final section details the history of Catholic prohibitions against masonry. We locate only one…

Description:
Omaha, 1872. Very good.. Small broadside, 8.25 x 5.5 inches. Previously folded. A couple of minor nicks at edges. Light tanning. The organizers of a Nebraska lottery for the benefit of the Mercy Hospital in Omaha advertise ticket sales in this March 28, 1872, broadside. James Monroe Pattee, known as the "Lottery King," came to Omaha in 1870, and with a Dr. J.W.B. Gardiner, a staff member and holder of the mortgage for the hospital, set up this raffle to pay the debt. The Grand Prize was the Redick Opera House in Omaha, valued at $50,000. When the prize was awarded, however, a man with connections to Pattee "won," and signed the Opera House back to Pattee. The citizens were outraged, and passed a law in Nebraska prohibiting lotteries for nearly 100 years. Pattee took his lottery schemes to Wyoming. Not in OCLC.

[Clearwater, Nb, 1900. About very good.. Thirteen original photographs, varying sizes but most approximately 3.5 x 5 inches. Small oblong album, with string-tied paper covers. Some splitting at spine; light rubbing and wear to wrappers. Photos mounted to album leaves; light fading and soiling to images. Contemporary manuscript captions. A charming group of thirteen original images of Clearwater, Nebraska, from about the turn of the 20th century. Surrounded by farm lands in northeastern Nebraska, the town began in earnest when the Chicago & Northwestern built a railroad depot on the site in 1881. From a population of just over 200 in 1900, the town has boasted a relatively steady group of approximately 400 residents since World War II. The images here show several views of the town, the namesake creek, and the photographer's home during winter, as well as views of boating and carriage excursions. Relatives of the compiler owned the nearby Marwood Ranch, and there are images of their cattle operations…
