Gwendolyn Brooks (1917 – 2000)

Gwendolyn Brooks was the first African American to win the Pulitzer Prize.

The poet and novelist is also remembered for being the first African American woman to hold the position of poetry consultant to the Library of Congress, and was also the poet laureate of the State of Illinois. Her first published work was her collection, A Street In Bronzeville at 28 years old.
