Description:
N.p.: N.p., 1973. Archive of 86 QSL cards from 45 countries, housed in a 32 page generic scrapbook binding, from dedicated radio enthusiast Mark Murphy, 1954-1973, the majority of which dates from the late 1950s. The majority of the QSL cards are addressed to Murphy, at various addresses in New York, Pennsylvania, and Ohio. QSL cards were sent by radio stations as confirmation of the receipt of a "reception report" from a listener, officially acknowledging and verifying the reception, and were popular to collect among radio enthusiasts as early as the 1920s. The archive found here, a vast and diverse collection, both in the widely varied graphic approach to the cards (from striking graphics and illustrations to photograph postcards and bi-folds with affixed photographs), as well as the expansive geographical reach of the collection, extending throughout Europe, Africa, Asia, the Caribbean, and Oceania, as well as a single North America QSL card from Mexico. An immense and wonderfully graphic… Read More

Description:
New York: Batten, Barton, Durstine and Osborn, 1942. Draft script for the 1942 radio show episode, originally broadcast on January 5, 1947. With a few annotations in manuscript pencil and ink on the front wrapper. The anthology series was part of a campaign by the DuPont chemical corporation to rehabilitate its image following the public exposure of its arms race profiteering during World War I. In lieu of traditional advertising, creative director Roy Durstine proposed that DuPont sponsor "Cavalcade," which integrated the company's slogan ("Better Things For Better Living Through Chemistry") and agenda into its stories of American achievement and inspiration. The show was an early experiment in propagandistic corporate brand-building, virtually unprecedented for a company that had no commercially available products to market to the public. To further promote their clean, humanitarian ideals, DuPont shied away from using attention-grabbing tactics, such as the sound of gunfire, that were popular on… Read More

Hollywood: CBS Radio, 1954. Vintage publicity photograph of William Conrad for the CBS radio series "Gunsmoke," circa 1954. Mimeo snipe and "CBS Photo by Gabor Rona" stamp on the verso. "Gunsmoke" first aired on CBS radio on April 26, 1952 with William Conrad in the lead as Marshall Matt Dillon. Conrad was already one of radio's biggest stars because his distinctive, resonant voice when he was cast along side Parley Baer, Howard McNear, and Georgia Ellis in the unique, somber radio Western. "Gunsmoke," the radio show initially had difficulty in finding sponsors given its realistic and dark story lines but talk quickly began in adapting it for television. Despite a campaign to use the radio cast for the television series, producers chose otherwise and cast James Arness in Conrad's role. The radio series aired for nine years, ending on June 18, 1961. 8 x 10 inches. Very Good plus, with faint scratches to upper right, a small closed tear in right margin, and faint creasing in margins.

Description:
Los Angeles: The Hollywood Reporter, 1962. Twelve original entertainment trade magazines, all from July 1962, focusing on film, radio, and television, with book reviews, job postings, ads for local California restaurants and real estate. Many issues also featured color centerfolds advertising contemporary films, that in effect acted as mini pullout posters. Rear wrappers often portrayed attractive film star portraits. Like its counterpart, The Daily Variety, THR began as a daily trade newspaper (1930) devoted to the entertainment industry, the first of its kind. Founder Wilkerson published the magazine until his death in 1962, his influential "Tradeviews" column still ran on the front page but subsequently taken over by editor Gillette. Wilkerson, who vehemently opposed the Screen Writers Guild (what he called the "Red Beachhead"), primarily used the column to name certain figures he felt to have Communist associations, and was the first to implicate legendary writers like Dalton Trumbo and Howard… Read More

Description:
N.p.: N.p., 1937. Draft script for the 1937 live radio show, which originally aired on CBS. Copy belonging to interviewee H. Bruce Humberstone, with his manuscript pencil annotations regarding line changes and deletions throughout. Sponsored by General Mills and marketed as the "Gold Medal Hour," the Hollywood in Person radio show was hosted by Art Baker (under the name "Bob Baker the Bisquick Maker") and Louise Roberts, who would drive to studio lots in a motorized live broadcasting studio and interview the Hollywood elite, such as Deanna Durbin, Basil Rathbone, Jesse Lasky, and Ann Sheridan. The show was an early example of tabloid journalism, with a focus on celebrity gossip and candid, unrehearsed disclosures-although, as the existence of this script proves, the interviews were of course meticulously planned beforehand. In this broadcast, Baker interviews director H. Bruce Humberstone and Twentieth Century-Fox contract player Arleen Whelan, an actress Humberstone claimed to have discovered… Read More

Description:
Los Angeles: Jack Stewart and Associates, 1950. Original radio script for "The Dead Are Never Lonely," episode 474 of season 10 (Sept. 25, 1950) of the popular radio program, "Inner Sanctum Mystery." The series aired from January 7, 1941 to October 5, 1952, and was created by producer Himan Brown. A total of 527 episodes were broadcast, most of them now presumed to be lost, including this one. Brief annotations in manuscript ink to a few pages. The anthology series featured mystery and horror stories, and its tongue-in-cheek introductions were in sharp contrast to shows like "Suspense" (1942-1962) and "The Whistler" (1942-1955). Early episodes opened with Raymond Edward Johnson introducing himself as, "Your host, Raymond," followed by spooky organ music by Lew White, and each episode punctuated by Raymond's morbid jokes and playful puns. Raymond's closing was an elongated "Pleasant dreeeeaams, hmmmmm?" and his style of narration became the standard for many similar radio programs to follow.… Read More
