Description:
N.p.: N.p., 1980. Archive of professional and vernacular photographs, flyers, newspapers, letters, and various ephemera relating to the Richmond-based African American musical group The Fantastic Waller Family, circa late 1970s-1980s. Formed in Richmond, Virginia in the mid-1970s, the show and dance band consisted of three brothers (Harry, Bruce, and Chris), two sisters (Karen and Sandra), and a five-piece horn backing band. The ensemble performed variously as The Waller Family, The Fantastic Waller Family, The Fabulous Waller Family, and The Wallers, playing a blend of R&B, soul, disco, funk, and pop. The group toured extensively throughout the east coast and southern US between the late 1970s and 1990s, but was still active as recently as the early 2000s. The archive contains over 75 unique photographs of the band performing and recording, a mix of promotional shots and professional and vernacular shots. The photographs also include two copies of a contact sheet (10 images), six strips of… Read More

Description:
London: Rough Trade, 1981. Vintage UK poster for the 1981 release of the Virgin Prunes' first EP, "Twenty Tens." Distributed by Rough Trade and released on the Baby Records label in the UK, humorously referenced here with the phrase "Buy Buy Baby" (also a sly anti-capitalist dig, consistent with the band's leftist bent). Formed in 1977, Irish post punk band the Virgin Prunes gained a significant cult following for their avant-garde, theatrical performances. The band disbanded in 1986 after the departure of front man and songwriter Gavin Friday, with the remaining members continuing to perform under the name The Prunes until 1991. 12.25 x 16 inches. Very Good plus, with some light creasing, rubbing, and edgewear.

N.p.: N.p., 1975. Original poster for a performance by COUM Transmissions held on February 18, 1975 at the Stedelijk Academy in Ghent, Belgium. The third in a series of five performances in the "Omissions" series, the previous two taking place that same month in Belgium and the final two in May and June in Germany. Scarce, with OCLC locating just a single copy. Brainchild of Genesis P-Orridge (nee Neil Megson), COUM Transmissions was an influential and controversial performance art group. Using similar techniques as, and occasionally working with, such experimental artists as William Burroughs, Brion Gysin, and the FLUXUS collective, as well as explicit nudity, bodily fluids, and other taboo material, they created shocking and confrontational exhibitions and happenings. The "Omissions" performances were very much in line with this aesthetic, with tour organizer Jean Paul van Bendegem describing them as "an exploration in the unusual of existing art-disciplines and a research in between these… Read More

London: Hammersmith Palais, 1984. Vintage mini-poster for a concert featuring artists Gary Glitter, The Meteors, and The Sid Presley Experience, performing at London's Hammersmith Palais on Sunday July 8th, 1984. Known largely for "Rock and Roll, Parts I and II," an essential for any ballpark experience and musical influence on countless other recording artists, this poster dates from Glitter's comeback tour after his temporary retirement in 1976. In the late 1990s Glitter would be ousted for a number of sex offender charges, including ownership of a large cache of child pornography and committing sexual acts with minors in multiple countries worldwide. His brief popularity, followed by his catastrophic fall, could in some ways be said to mirror the trajectory of the entire glam rock genre. 11.5 x 16.25 inches, photocopy on goldenrod stock. New York and Boston: N.p., 1979. Collection of nine posters of performances by Glenn Branca, 1975-1979. Essentially documenting the rise and seminal period of New York's No Wave scene, a graphically bold set of small to large-size posters advertising performances by Branca and his bands The Static, Theoretical Girls, and Daily Life, as well as theater pieces by Branca and Branca and John Rehberger, bands such as Y Pants, The Gynecologists, and Arsenal, as well as musicians, filmmakers, and performance artists including Laurie Anderson, John Lurie, Ann Messner, and Rhys Chatham. One of the posters date from 1975, five from 1978, and three from 1979. London: EMI, 1987. Vintage UK record store poster for the 1987 single, the opening track for David Bowie's 1987 album "Never Let Me Down." Exploring the theme of homelessness in the US, "Day-In Day-Out" is perhaps best remembered today for its controversial music video, which depicted a young couple struggling to survive in Los Angeles. The video was heavily censored, and particularly challenging scenes (including footage of a man urinating on Ronald Reagan's star on the Hollywood Walk, a child spelling out the word fuck in building blocks, and the heavily implied rape of the video's protagonist) led to the video being banned by many television stations. 60 x 39.75 inches, folded as issued. Vintage two-color poster for an unseen performance by punk icons the Stooges, queer hippie theatre troupe the Cockettes, all-girl rock group The GTOs, and John Mendelsohn's short-lived rock band Super Star, held on at the Hollywood Palladium on July 16, 1971. The show would ultimately be canceled after The Stooges formally broke up on July 9, 1971. A preview of The Cockettes' satirical 1971 film "Tricia's Wedding" was also to have been shown. The film featured The Cockettes reenacting President Nixon's daughter Tricia's wedding to Edward Cox, interspersed with a number of humorous scenes, including Eartha Kitt spiking the punch bowl with LSD. Even before it was canceled, it's hard to imagine how this concert would have come together, given the clashing styles of the acts. Founded in 1969 in San Francisco, the Cockettes were a performance art group that performed improvised musical numbers in elaborate genderbending costumes, and had become a sensation among the West Coast arts and… Read More
