Description:
N.p.: N.p., 1973. Archive of 86 QSL cards from 45 countries, housed in a 32 page generic scrapbook binding, from dedicated radio enthusiast Mark Murphy, 1954-1973, the majority of which dates from the late 1950s. The majority of the QSL cards are addressed to Murphy, at various addresses in New York, Pennsylvania, and Ohio. QSL cards were sent by radio stations as confirmation of the receipt of a "reception report" from a listener, officially acknowledging and verifying the reception, and were popular to collect among radio enthusiasts as early as the 1920s. The archive found here, a vast and diverse collection, both in the widely varied graphic approach to the cards (from striking graphics and illustrations to photograph postcards and bi-folds with affixed photographs), as well as the expansive geographical reach of the collection, extending throughout Europe, Africa, Asia, the Caribbean, and Oceania, as well as a single North America QSL card from Mexico. An immense and wonderfully graphic… Read More

Beverly Hills, CA: VEB DEFA-Studio fur Spielfilme [DDDE] / Crown International Pictures, 1960. Vintage borderless still photograph from the 1960 East German film "First Spaceship on Venus." Based on the 1951 Stanislaw Lem novel "The Astronauts." DEFA production company rubber stamp to the verso. Featuring an image of Yoko Tani patching up an injury on her shipmate Julius Ongewe. An intentionally multicultural crew of astronauts travels to Venus to attempt to make contact with Venusians, who have left a message on Earth deep in the Gobi desert, only to find that the warlike Venusians have all been killed by their own nuclear weapons. The astronauts return to Earth to spread their message of peace and nuclear disarmament, an apt message for the Cold War period in which it was created. Shot on location in East Germany. Ultimately an agreeably interesting artifact of its time, with lengthy diatribes and cheesy set design, source novel author Stanislaw Lem heartily disapproved of the film… Read More

N.p.: N.p., 1960. Vintage satin banner with hand-sewn lettering, by an unknown artist, made after Paul Krassner and John Francis Putnam's 1963 poster. Krassner created the "Fuck Communism" poster for sale through his satirical underground magazine "The Realist," with typography by longtime "Mad" magazine art director Putnam. In addition to publishing The Realist from 1958 to 2001, Krassner was a founder of the radical activist group the Youth International Party (The Yippies) and an early member of Ken Kesey's Merry Pranksters. In the words of occasional Realist contributor Kurt Vonnegut, "At the beginning of the 1960s, FUCK was believed to be so full of bad magic as to be unprintable. [...] By having FUCK and COMMUNISM fight it out in a single sentence, Krassner wasn't merely being funny as heck. He was demonstrating how preposterous it was for so many people to be responding to both words with such cockamamie Pavlovian fear and alarm." 36 x 14 inches. Near Fine.
