A history of African American newspapers beginning in 1827 and continuing through to the book's publication, with over 70 biographical sketches of editors and journalists, including a separate chapter dedicated to female African American journalists, and essays on the state of the Black press and its relationship to "Anglo-Saxon" newspapers. Rare. About Very Good in maroon cloth boards with titles and design in gilt, white, and black. Boards soiled and toned, with fraying to the spine ends and corners, and slightly shaken spine.

Boston: Phillips, Sampson, 1856. First American Edition, preceded by the 1841 French edition published by Magen et Comon. Scarce. Basis for the 1950 film noir "Vendetta," written for the screen by W.R. Burnett and directed by Mel Ferrer. Very Good in publisher's brown cloth with gilt titles. Contemporary owner name on the front endpaper. Slightly bowed boards, with mild rubbing to the extremities and lightly chipped spine ends.

Boston: Taggard and Thompson, 1863. First Edition. First Edition. A collection of children's fables with accompanying illustrations demonstrating how to make shadow puppets. Included is a story of a freed slave who is tempted to steal to feed his starving cow, but refuses, and his ultimately rewarded for his honesty. Very Good in wrappers. Light soiled, with a two inch spilt to the spine.

Leipzig: Bernhard Tauchnitz, 1888. Two volumes. First German Edition, preceding the UK Edition by one year. Text in English. The final novel published during Collins' lifetime, a exploration and rejection of the idea of hereditary evil, the story of two women raised as sisters by a minister and his wife, only for it to be revealed that one of them is actually the daughter of a woman who was executed for murdering her husband. Professional repair to separation of the front and rear boards on Volume Two, else both volumes Very Good plus in the red three quarter leather and marbled paper boards. Light rubbing to the hinges and corners, with light soil overall.

New York: Hurd and Houghton, 1872. First Edition. First Edition. 12mo. Publisher's red cloth, with titles and rule in gilt on the front board, design and rule in blind on the rear board, no titles on the spine; all page edges gilt, reddish-brown coated endpapers. Very Good with some rubbing to the boards, slightly cocked. A very presentable copy overall.
