Discharge papers for Thomas Fulford, a private in Company B, 64th Regiment Infantry, Indiana Volunteers, dated Sept. 30, 1863 at St. Louis, Mo, by reason of Surgeon's Certificate of Disability. In left margin, handwritten in red ink, "Phthisis-hereditary-developed by exposure. He is unfit for the Invalid Corps". Signed at bottom "By Order of Maj. Gen. Schofield" and then signed "J.K. On Bates' personal stationery, dated Jan. 6, 1906 and headed "Hon. Knute Nelson, United States Senate, Washington, D.C. Dear Sir:- I have the honor to enclose under separate cover a copy of "The Panama Canal, System and Projects", and venture to hope that some of the matter contained therein may be of interest to you." A superb World War II archive featuring a significant manuscript photograph album (oblong 17" x 12") containing 147 photographs on 46 pages (17 pages blank at rear), service records, citations, orders, medals, patches, bars, newspaper clippings, ID card, dog tags, and additional loose photographs and negatives, all belonging to Edwin Oscar Ahbe (1916-1995) . Ahbe was inducted on Dec. 1, 1943, reporting to Camp Peekskill, NY and serving as a Cameraman Motion Picture 043 and Combat Photographer in the 3374th Signal Photographic Service Company. After stops at Fort Sheridan and Camps Smith and Crowder, his first overseas photographs in the album begin in Ceylon. A small manuscript list shows he left NY early on Oct. 20, 1944 and records him being in Newfoundland, Azores, Cashblanca (sic), Tripoli, Cairo, Aboudan Iran, Karachi India, Kandy Ceylon, Burma, and China. Unclear whether this is in Mock's handwriting. Theodore F. Mock was listed as the Camp Custer Photographer in David V. Tinder's "Directory of Early Michigan Photographers" published by Clements Library, 2013. Camp Custer, at Battle Creek, Michigan, had over 100,000 US Army troops pass through its doors between 1917-1919. He was a member of the Washburn-Langford-Doane Expedition in 1870 that explored the area of Wyoming that would eventually become Yellowstone National Park and he was the son of United States Senator Lyman Trumbull. Will H. Hays managed Warren G. Hardings successful campaign for the Presidency of the U.S. and was subsequently appointed Postmaster General. After a year in that position, he resigned to become most famously known as the first President of Motion Picture Producers and Distributors of America (MPPDA), which under his guidance published a blacklist of actors and workers studios should not hire, inserted moral clauses into actors' contracts, and published an informal list of suggested guidelines for film producers.
