About This Item

Tight, bright and clean with shiny covers. Very faint shelfwear to corners. 227 pages with a glossary. Illustrated with black and white photos. 5.5" X8.5" X .5" 14cm X 21.5cm X 1.5cm
An exploration of the Oglala Lakotans' culture and spiritual beliefs as related by the late, revered medicine man Pete S. Catches Sr. (Petaga Yuha Mani- He Walks with Hot Coals) and his son, Peter V. Catches Jr. (Zintkala Oyate) of the South Dakota Pine Ridge Reservation. Both are Spotted Eagle medicine men. Petaga Yuha Mani is the Sundance chief of the Oglala Sioux and is credited with reviving the Sundance ceremony. They focus on the deep importance of understanding and living traditional Lakotan values in the face of (mostly white) men's aggressions and controls. Likewise, telling stories about their lives, sacred rites, and ceremonies, they eloquently and informatively reveal Lakotans' close and respectful relationships with one another, their surroundings, and their deity.
