RARE lithograph wall chart for the device called the "Structural Differential" which Alfred Korzybski patented in 1925 as a means to aid in visualizing the process he called "abstracting". This was to be used as a training device in general semantics, a field of study Korzybski is credited with founding. The chart is Near Fine, rubbed lower right, mounted on two stained wooden dowels with ribbon hanger 18" wide by 38" high. Korzybski's work in semantics heavily influenced science fiction authors such as A.E. Van Vogt, Robert A. Heinlein, Poul Anderson, and H. Beam Piper, as well as L. Ron Hubbard and Joseph W. Campbell. His most famous quote "The map is not the territory" comes from this longer quote "A map is not the territory it represents, but, if correct, it has a similar structure to the territory, which accounts for its usefulness."( Science and Sanity, Korzybski, 1931). West Hollywood: The Shakespeare Society of America, 1972. Poster, 35x11.5" silkscreen printed in three colors on thick, yellow stock. Signed by Newman in the image and dated in 1971. Pinholes at corners, dates changed at bottom with pasted on labels, else nicely preserved. Will ship tightly rolled as found. Tremendous image, in an interesting, long format, from the prolific California artist, Earl Newman. Shortly after this poster was made, Newman would move to Summit, Oregon where he still lives and works. The artist is most well known for his silkscreen posters he produced for the Monterey Jazz Festival in the 60s. This poster is for a production of Macbeth by the Shakespeare Society of America, likely in 1972. We cannot find mention of this particular work by Newman elsewhere.

N.p., 1965. Original four-color screenprint, 89cm x 57cm (ca 35" x 22-1/2"), on heavy white poster stock. Signed in pencil lower right, dated 1965. Light edgewear; darkening and adhesive tape remnants to verso; image bright and clean - Very Good to Near Fine. Striking portrait of a folksinger with a twelve-string guitar. Though untitled, the image bears a strong resemblance to Newman's 2009 poster-portrait of Pete Seeger, who we strongly suspect is the subject of this piece as well. Rare image by the talented West Coast printmaker Earl Newman (b. 1930), who began designing posters for the California music scene in the late 1950s. Some of his best-known designs have been his annual posters for the Monterey Jazz Festival, which he began producing in 1963.
