--- The French historian and journalist René Puaux (1878-1936) worked for the internationally renowned Parisian newspaper "Le Temps" and was a fervent supporter and advocate of the Greek cause during the Balkan Wars. His reports from the front were collected in two publications, "Dans les Balkans" 1912-13, and "La malhereuse Epire", which was translated into Greek. Description:
1805 1ed SLAVERY African Memoranda Capt Philip Beaver Bulama Colony Sierra Leone

Captain Philip Beaver was an 18th-century Royal Navy officer who is best known for his colonization voyage to the island of Bulama. This 1792 voyage proved to be a complete failure – the colonists who survived were uninspired, unhealthy, and apathetic toward establishing a new colony and moved to nearby Sierra Leone.
Beaver's book 'African Memoranda' is the captain's account of the events on the ship as well as on the island of Bulama. This first edition includes two engravings of the 'block house' on the island. Interestingly, this book became a catalyst for abolishing African slave trade.

Description:
1824 1ed Arctic Exploration Private Journal of Lyon Parry Eskimos PROVENANCE

George Francis Lyon was a 19th-century British naval officer who made his name keeping journals on his African and Arctic voyages. His private journals, particularly of his Arctic exploration with William Parry, became highly influential to later expeditions to those seeking the Northwest Passage encountering Eskimo Indians.
According to Field,
"Almost the entire volume is devoted to the narration of the peculiarities of the Aborigines of the Arctic regions. Captain Lyon's curiosity led him to observe with great attention, the habits of life, and traits of character of the different tribes of Esquimaux, which his humanity, and good management attracted to his winter quarters. They built their villages near his ships, and permitted a closer familiarity, than any other of the Arctic voyagers was able to attain. His narrative, therefore, abounds with incidents of their intercourse, and curious anecdotes of Esquimaux life."… Read More

Cairo, The Nile Mission Press, (1919).. Soft cover. .. Small octavo. Pp. 54. Plus 34 halftone photographic plates, printed on different paper, bound in. Original pictorial grey card wrappers, bit rubbed, corner creased, upper wrapper with tape repair for short tear. Else, a fine copy. ~ A fascinating small book, written and photographed by the Senior Chaplain to the Forces, Egyptian Expeditionary Force, with the intention to provide His Majesty's soldiers with a handy book of reference to Palestine and the Holy Land. The book contains a relatively large number of plates, depicting ancient and new towns and villages, holy shrines, landscapes, historical monuments and sites, and some inhabitants. Most fascinating are the images of pure military interest: a derelict tank; a cannon named "Jericho Jane"; and a mobile gun, nicknamed the "Finish Turk". Reverend Payne's text is a wonderful combination of historical background, actual information, traveller's notations, and… Read More

Description:
1750 George Anson Voyage Round the World MAPS Spain South America Brazil Peru

George Anson was an 18th-century British Navy admiral who is noted for his important world voyage in which he circumnavigated the globe. This voyage, beginning in 1740, was initiated in order to disrupt Spain and their acquisitions from the Pacific – even though the squadron saw certain danger.
"Anson's voyage is remembered as a classic tale of endurance and leadership in the face of fearful disasters" (Rodger, 239)
He saw substantial victory by capturing Spanish ships carrying pieces of eight, silver, and other treasure; thus, allowing Anson to return home a very rich sailor. This voyage took Anson and company into South America and home by way of China – a true world voyage!

Authorship of this work is held with some ambiguity. According to the DNB and Sabin,
"A claim was made that the work was written, not by Mr. Walter, but by Mr. Benjamin Robins. This has never been substantiated except by mere assertion; and… Read More

Description:
1681 DUTCH Neyn Voyages BRAZIL America INDIANS Florida Ceremony Rituals Funerals
Pieter de Neyn's "Lust-hof der Huwelyken" is a late 17th-century treatise on the ceremonial customs and rites of weddings and funerals from around the world. Neyn covers numerous cultures including natives of Brazil, Native American Indians, Southern Asia, and India, as well as African tribes. Neyn also gives attention to notable Dutch voyagers including Jan Huyghen van Linschoten.
However, the greatest appeal of this work is Neyn's consideration of the Americas. According to Sabin, this work
"[known as] The Pleasant Matrimonial Garden, treats the following American tribes: Appalachians, Brazilians, Inhabitants of Guiana, Florida, Ingas (i.e. Incas), New-Netherland, New-France, Virginia."
A highly desirable and rare 1681 first edition, complete with full-page engravings!
