London: Victor Gollancz Ltd, 1933. First [only]. Very Good. A very good copy in black cloth with gilt titles on spine A small tear and a chip at top of spine and tiny tears at bottom of spine Binding is tight and sound, however The name and date for a previous owner "C C Aston 1933" are at the top of the front pastedown Text is milldly age darkened, but no other marks or damage at all

The English physical chemist CP Snow is most renowned for The Two Cultures and the Scientific Revolution in which he lamented the intellectual divide between the sciences and the humanities His work as a prolific writer of fiction, however, is less well-known, though he wrote seventeen novels over the course of his lifetime New Lives for Old, was published anonymously in 1933, but Snow subsequently suppressed, so that it is the most obscure of these works The novel's fictional protagonist Billy Pilgrim,a professor of biophysics at Kings College, London, develops a technique for synthesising a human sex hormone which can prevent the atrophy of the ageing body
Snow was early in his career and apparently felt that the subject matter could foster negative reactions in his pursuit of a Cambridge academic position Whatever the reason, The novel would never be reprinted, and he would not even acknowledge its existence publicly, until very late in his life There were apparently only 1,500 copies sold, and it has thus become Snow's rarest work, and in fact, quite scarce in general, seldom coming on the market

Charles Percy Snow, Baron Snow, Kt, CBE, FRSL (1905--1980) was an English novelist and physical chemist who also served in several important positions in the British Civil Service and briefly in the UK government He is best known for his series of novels known collectively as Strangers and Brothers, and for The Two Cultures, a 1959 lecture in which he laments the gulf between scientists and "literary intellectuals" 399 pp.

FIRST EDITION OF THIS MACMILLAN FICTION AWARD WINNING NOVEL BY DAVID STOREY, THE FIRST BOOK BY THE AUTHOR. "The author knows intimately the curious world-in-miniature of Rugby's League - the back-biting and intrigue, the thrills, the anxiety, the atmosphere in the changing-room after the big match. He knows, too, the grime and smoke of a dour northern town that is the vivid background to his story. In his brilliant dialogue he has caught absolutely the characters of the football players and industrialists about whom he writes. This is a fascinating, witty, moving and, above all, very real and human book." - publisher
