Chicago. C.J. Howard. 1927. Collection is contained in original imprinted cardboard C.J. Howard packaging box. 7"x4.75" when closed (horizontal folding card).7"x9.5" when opened. Each card presents a striking Art Deco multicolored lithograph and various coloured borders and decorations printed upon folded heavy card stock. Early in the 1920s Charles Mather, who worked for his familys Chicago printing house, the Mather Company, took an idea brought to him by one of the firms salesmen, Charles Howard Rosenfeld. What Rosenfeld proposed was a series of posters whose focus was to give workers incentive to work better and to work harder. Mather called these prints, Constructive Organization Posters. These posters were made to be placed on office and factory walls and were expected to inspire workers to do their best. Mather sold his posters by subscription and produced more than 300 varieties between 1923 and 1929.In 1925 Rosenfeld and another employee…

Metropolis (Original UK Program for the 1927 film)
by Fritz Lang (director); Thea von Harbou (screenplay, novel)
- Used
London: Wardour Films / Universum Film [UFA], 1927. Original program for the London premiere of the film on March 21st, 1927 at the Marble Arch Pavilion, preceded in English by the US release earlier that month but with different title cards. Director Lang's expressionist masterpiece, based on the novel and written for the screen by then-wife von Harbou, one of the most enduring and influential films of the silent era.
In addition to the normal synopsis, photos, and quotes from the actors, the program presents pieces on the film's groundbreaking special effects and camerawork, and, most interestingly, a side-by-side comparison of a portion of the film script with von Harbou's novel, published the previous year. Any original paper relating to "Metropolis" is scarce, with a 2012 post in Peter Harrington's blog ranking this program among the most difficult items.
Very Good plus in stapled wrappers. Owner stamp to the title page. Wrappers lightly creased horizontally and vertically, front wrapper lightly faded and rubbed, light foxing to the rear wrapper with tiny ink initials to the upper corner. Housed in a custom clamshell box.
Ebert I. Eureka Masters of Cinema 16. Rosenbaum 1000. Schrader Canon Fodder 5. Godard, Histoires du cinema.

Broadside, measuring 29 by 41 inches, closely framed. $6000.Very large original movie poster produced for the 1921 re-release of D.W. Griffith's pioneering film, The Birth of a Nation.Griffith's dramatization of the American Civil War and Reconstruction, based on Thomas Dixon's 1905 novel The Clansmen, was immediately controversial for its racist depiction of African Americans and its heroic portrayal of the Ku Klux Klan; it is now considered instrumental in the revival of the KKK in the 1920s. The poster, composed entirely of text in red and black within a black border, reads: ""The Supreme Picture / Of All Time! / Birth / Of A / Nation / D.W. Griffith's / 8th Wonder of the World / 18,000 People / 3,000 Horses / 3 Years to Produce!"" First released in 1915, the 1921 re-release elicited the comment ""The supreme picture of all time"" from the New York Mail, used here as the…

Washington D.C.: US Govt. Printing Office, 1942. Colour poster (28 x 40 in). Professionally mounted, glazed, and framed using archival materials. Original creases from folding, bright and fresh. Excellent condition. An important Second World War poster promoting women in the wartime workforce, produced in 1942 by the War Manpower Commission. At the time, "Women in the War" was one of the most widely distributed images of a woman laboring in war production, unlike the "We Can Do It" poster, which was produced only for Westinghouse plants during a few weeks in 1943 and did not become iconic until the 1980s. "Among the many agencies President Roosevelt had created during the war was the War Manpower Commission, formed in April 1942 to oversee war labor issues in the military, industrial, and civilian sectors. And in June 1942, the Office of War Information was formed to manage the flows of news and propaganda about the war to the public. By 1943, when the labor shortage was most acute, the two…
