De luxe india paper edition - seventh impression thus, 8vo, 1193, (3) pp. Two folding maps plus one in the text, marbled endpapers, light creasing to the half title. Original black buckram, upper cover decorated in gilt, silver and green, held in the original box with a printed label to the upper half - a label for the Hobbit in the same edition faintly visible underneath, one corner of the upper part of the box slightly cracked, otherwise an excellent copy. First published thus in 1969.
Synopsis
The Lord of the Rings is an epic high fantasy novel written by philologist and Oxford University professor J. R. R. Tolkien. The story began as a sequel to Tolkien's earlier, less complex children's fantasy novel The Hobbit (1937), but eventually developed into a much larger work. It was written in stages between 1937 and 1949, much of it during World War II.
