About This Item

Paris: Gauthier-Villars, 1904. First edition. Hardcover. Very Good. Slim 8vo. [5], vi, [2], 2-138, [2] pp. Half contemporary black morocco over marbled boards with the spine in six compartments; all edges sprinkled. With publisher's device on the title page. Part of the Collection de Monographies sur La Théorie des Fonctions, publiée sous la direction de M. Émile Borel [= published under the direction of M. Borel]. Bibliotheca Chemico-Mathematica 16280. Kline 1044-1051. Lebesgue was one of the finest mathematicians of the twentieth century. Two of his greatest accomplishments were his theory of integration and his concept of measure, both of which were first presented in his 1902 dissertation. The present work is based on Lebesgue's lectures in 1902 and 1903 and is the first publication of this groundbreaking work in book form. A nice copy of one of the true high spots of twentieth century mathematics. Notable rubbing to the corners and spine and sunning to the spine, each pastedown has offsetting from a removed bookplate.
