New York: Dodd, Mead & Company, 1902. Octavo (19.3 x 13 cm.), vi, 315 pages. Photographically illustrated. FIRST EDITION. A history of tenement life in New York City, and of the social centers, working girls' clubs and settlement houses that grew up to deal with conditions there. Subjects include the growth of tenement and apartment living, adult education, children's education, work houses, the Woman's Home Improvement Club, the city market, and cooking classes. The thirty-six photographic illustrations are uncredited but are attractive and well-printed. ~ Clean and sound. In publisher's decorated trade binding, unsigned; with green-, red-, and gilt-stamped with small applied colored lithograph to front board. Fine.
