Description

Amsterdam: Stedelijk Museum Book. Fine. No Binding. Signed by Illustrator(s). Complete set of three offset lithographs each measuring 64 x 53 cm. Printed on thick wove paper with full margins. The last panel 'That my ship was below them' is hand signed in the lower margin by Roy Lichtenstein. Each with the publisher's stamps on the verso. Printed by Drukkerij Luii and Co, First produced by The Stedelijk Museum in 1966. From the 1966 edition just a small number of impressions were signed (for the benefit of the museum). There was a subsequent issue in 1974 and 1983, also for the benefit of the museum. A few impressions were also hand-signed from the 1974 and possibly 1983 edition. A very fine set. .

The work is hosted at the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam. The source of the subject matter is Jerry Grandenetti's panels from "Wingmate of Doom," in All American Men of War, no. 90 (March–April 1962), DC Comics. Early on in his career Roy Lichtenstein based his work mostly on cartoons and comic books. This triptych drew from the comic book "All American Men of War".
