Name Roberts to upper margin of title later partially overwritten by Rachel Dowding, West Dulwich. Pastedowns have been covered by tan silk. Final blank lacking corners and some offsetting from the last printed page. Some pale foxing thoughout. Side notes giving references and dates.

Quarto gilt-ruled calf (rebacked in leather with original red gilt title label laid on, tips worn) All edges marbled. Engraved Title + Titlepage in red & black with metal cut vignette "In hoc signo" + [28]pp prelims +160pp (inc. at end "Appendix Fabularum a Marquardo Gudio) +[82]pp indices, 99 Fables with 9 extra scenes illustrated in great detail in 108 roundelles. Lacks folding portrait of Prince of Nassau (often omitted), Plate 18 misbound at page 50. Some staining from former damp most evident to early leaves & at end of book but hardly affecting the plates. *Most luxurious of the Dutch Phaedrus editions specially made for the Prince of Nassau (Lamb Annales Phaedriani 96, Cohen-deRicci 797-9, Landwehr 247).

Appears to lack 4 of the plates of Sibyls. Some gatherings coming loose from spine. Text in Latin with brief passages in Greek, some Greek text with parallel Latin translation. *Imperfect copy, in need of binding repair, priced accordingly.

Quarto contemporary panelled calf (rebacked & blind-tooled with black spine label/tips worn) 336pp +(vi)index The Ae of Aquaticae & Noxae are very faintly printed on the Titlepage and there is slight paper thinning to the paper in 4 small (1cm diameter) round areas and part of 2 letters have been strengthened with ink. Wepfer was the first to analyze the pharmacological effect of hemlock and its poison. In this treatise 1679 the author also reports the discovery of the duodenal glands.

Birmingham Law Society bookplate on pastedownn & stamp of same on back of title & lower margin of book list. *Clean nice copy of this study of legal jurisdiction between the King and the Church, written in 1641 but book first published 1661 after Restoration of Monarchy (WING S602).

Hand coloured plates heightened with gum (38 with 154 birds shown in groups from 2-6 per plate) by Victor Adam +uncoloured frontis portrait of Buffon +pretty hand coloured engraved titlepage by Pauquet /Rouget sc. all with tissue guards.. Small quarto plum roan spine extra gilt compartments & faux bands with cloth sides (tips a bit worn/rebacked with old spine relaid/cloth rubbed). Portrait Frontis +hand coloured titlepage +printed titlepage +Portrait +xxiii [1]p blank +312pp. Text pages with some foxing, more so to first & last pages. Plates mostly clean & white but a few have pale edge foxing. Two tissue guards torn, one at p17 lost. The plates are all beautifully hand coloured and heightened with gum.

Geneva: Barde, Manget & Compagnie et a Paris Buisson., 1785. Hardcover. Very Good. Engraved plates (16 as per list) mainly showing children at lessons, at play, observing adults etc. . Duodecimo (16.5x10.5cm) later leather with gilt floral decorated spine and contrasting spine title label (tips bit rubbed) All edges spckled rouge, [24]pp prelims +228pp (inc. introduction & text conversations of a father and children). Text oages and plates clean & crisp throughout. *Second edition of this translation, first published Hamburg 1783 had only 3 plates with 4 illustrations to each, this edition added 4 more illustrations, printed each on a separate plate (verso blank) and with a plate list not in 1st edition. Plate 9 misnumbered XI. This is one of the earlier books by Campe, who wrote many children's titles mainly on history and travel. His Petit Robinson and travel books went through many editions but this is much less common, indeed quite scarce (Gumuchian 1046).
