About This Item

New York: Selmar Hess This heavy volume was one of a series of books on geography, history, and travel published by Selmar Hess of New York. Although undated, my research of similar volumes in this series indicates that it was published between 1866 and 1875. It's notable for hundreds of beautiful mid-19th Century illustrations, many of which are engravings with original tissue guards. However, the illustrations with tissue guards often have foxing, particularly in the margin areas, possibly as a result of acidity in the tissue guards themselves. The other illustrations and pages are mainly free of foxing. Countries and cities featured in this particular volume (Volume 4), include Norway; Tripoli; St. Petersburgh, Russia; Lebanon including Beyrut (Beirut) and the Cedars of Lebanon; Mexico; New Caledonia (French); Portugal; Athens, Greece; The Bermudas; West Indies; British Guiana; Isthmus of Panama; and Denmark. This unusual book is in Very Good - condition. The decorative brown cloth covers have die-stamping in black and gilt on the front panel and spine, some of which have been rubbed. (Click on photo). There is some discoloration on the front panel and spine, and there is a very small hole near the bottom of the spine cloth. The book has all-edge gilt. The interior includes ivory moire end papers, with front and rear hinge splits, probably due to the weight of this large volume (5 1/2 pounds). However, the binding itself remains tight and secure. The pages and illustrations are clean with the exception of the foxing on the engraving pages noted. The illustrations are either full page or half page. The book contains 410 pages, although numbered from 400 to 810. The book measures 9 1/2 by 12 inches. Because of the weight, domestic Priority rate shipping and international rates will be adjusted after purchase since rates listed are not accurate for this particular volume. Since international shipping might be costly, potential international buyers should email me in advance of purchase regarding shipping costs to their countries. Several photo examples of illustrations from this volume can be sent upon email request. . Hard Cover. Very Good -/No Jacket. Illus. by Gustave Dore, Berard, Lancelot, Jules Noel, et al.. 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall.
